Drugs and Breastfeeding Study Module 060 (6L CERPs)
The purpose of this Study Module is to offer the learner a combination of theoretical information on the features of drugs that determine their suitability for use by breastfeeding mothers, and some specific guidelines on which drugs are and are not suitable. Lactation consultants may not prescribe drugs, nevertheless a knowledge of the possible effects of mothers’ drug use on breastfed infants is important to a consultant’s ability to offer guidance and reassurance to breastfeeding clients.
Key content areas:
- Mechanisms of transfer of drugs from maternal plasma into breastmilk
- Factors determining infant sensitivity to drugs
- Information on specific drugs
- Review of research on effects of intrapartum pain relief on initiation establishment of breastfeeding
